Fat freezing is a relatively new aesthetic treatment and has only been around for about 12 years. Vetvries originated in the US and was first approved by the FDA in 2010. Today there are many different cosmetic and fat reduction clinics.
Fat freezing is an extremely effective treatment method that reduces fat deposits in certain areas of the body. Common treatment areas are the inner and outer thighs, sides, abdomen, legs and armpits. It is possible to treat men’s chin and chest with a special applicator.
Fat freezing can also be called cryolipolysis. People who receive the treatment see up to 40% permanent fat loss in the treated area after just one treatment. However, if the client gains weight, the effect will be reduced or completely eliminated.
For many, this sounds too good to be true, and as with most cosmetic treatments, there are health risks to consider.
Basics of fat freezing
Depending on the doctor and the device used, the freezing temperature varies from -1 to -10 degrees.
Fat cells are more sensitive to freezing temperatures than other cells such as nerves, skin and blood cells. Cooling the area only destroys the fat cells. Damaged cells undergo cell death before being removed from the body by the lymphatic system.
Safety of fat freezing
Fat freezing has been widely studied and is considered a relatively safe procedure, especially compared to liposuction and other fat loss treatments. However, some medical conditions may increase adverse side effects. If the person is more sensitive to treatment, for example because of Raynaud’s disease, cold urticaria or hypoproteinemia.
A condition can occur as a result of fat freezing treatment. This condition is called paradoxical adipose tissue hyperplasia. Previous studies have put the risk of the disease at between 1:4,000 and 1:20,000. Many have called for more research because more clarity is needed on paradoxical adipose tissue hyperplasia.
